When JPG to PNG makes sense
PNG doesn't lose quality each time you save, so it's a good working format if you'll edit an image again and again. It also supports transparency, which you can then add in a design app.
What it won't do
Converting can't bring back detail JPG already threw away. The file will also usually get bigger, often several times over. If you only need to share a photo, stay with JPG.
