Fill in a PDF form that has no fields
Many PDFs are a paper form saved as a file, so clicking a box does nothing. Put a text box on each line and type your answer. To tick a checkbox, type a capital X and drag it into the square. Add date puts in today's date, written out in full, and you can change it before you start. It's quicker than printing, writing by hand and scanning, and easier to read.
Fillable form or flat PDF?
Click a box in your browser's PDF viewer first. If a cursor appears, the form has real fields: Chrome, Edge and Firefox can fill them in and save them, and you don't need anything else. If nothing happens, the PDF is flat. You can type on a PDF like that here, or use the text tool in Firefox's or Edge's PDF viewer, Preview on a Mac (Markup toolbar, then Text), or Fill & Sign in Adobe Acrobat Reader, which is free. Rivmu works in any current browser, on a phone too, with nothing to install.
Make it look right
Every box can look different. Pick Sans, Serif, Typewriter or Handwritten, make it bold, and change the size and color. Match the size to the form's printed text so long answers stay on the line. Arabic is set right to left. Chinese, Japanese and Korean aren't supported yet, and you'll see a note if any characters are left out.
Mistakes to avoid
Check the spelling before you press Start: the tool can't change text once it's in the file, so a typo means running the original again. Don't type over words that are already printed, because they stay visible underneath. Keep the original until you've opened the new file and checked every page. If the PDF has a password, remove it before you add the file.
Formats and limits
It takes one PDF up to 300 MB, or 100 MB on a phone. The text is added on top of the page as real text, so it stays sharp when you zoom in, and most viewers let you select it.
Questions people ask
Can I edit the text that's already in the PDF?
No. This tool adds new text on top. It can't change or delete what's already there.
Can I add text to several pages?
Yes. Move to another page with the arrows and add more boxes there. Everything is saved in one file.
How do I tick a checkbox?
Type a capital X, set the size so it fits the square, and drag it in.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. Tap Add text, type, and drag the box with your finger. Phones take PDFs up to 100 MB.
Is my PDF uploaded?
No. The text is added by your browser, and the file never leaves your device.
Can I sign at the same time?
Use Sign PDF, which has the same text and date boxes plus a signature. It adds a visual signature, not a certified digital one.
